You’ll learn how to build and communicate a brand narrative for a variety of fashion organisations and you’ll gain experience of digital technologies and platforms. Topics you may study include consumer behaviour, segmentation, trend forecasting, marketing planning, visual merchandising, digital marketing, brand development, international fashion marketing and public relations. The final year facilitates students’ exploration of the potential future markets, changes and business strategies employed to maximise profit. Marketing in different sized organisations and for different market levels will also be included, with opportunities to provide marketing consultancy and start or support a new enterprise. Graduates will be highly employable, and strong practitioners - with exemplary transferable skills. The course aims to produce successful professionals and entrepreneurs in a truly exciting field of work.

Students will investigate the current volatility in the marketplace, and the need for agile supply chains where supplier and customer teams explore opportunities for realigning processes. They will research the importance of adopting the triple bottom line, i.e. planet, people and profit, to ensure the long-term success of the business and future well-being of society in line with the UN’s SDG 12. This module aims to provide a foundation for students to develop their understanding of marketing research methods for academic and professional purposes. Students will explore a number of areas of marketing research including; the use of both primary and secondary data; an introduction to quantitative and qualitative research; and creating research samples. In addition, students will develop an appreciation of ethical implications of the research process to facilitate responsible research practice. The module provides an introduction to the market research industry and relates research skills learned in the module to real-life application in business.

You can expect a decent number of contact hours – usually between 20 and 25 hours – in your first year of a fashion degree. On top of this, you will be expected to do a fair bit of independent study, whether that’s at home or in the fashion studios. This could include reading journal articles and books, conducting research, preparing for assessments, working on individual projects and meeting peers to complete group work.

All of our undergraduate courses offer an optional sandwich year route that gives you the opportunity to apply for an industry placement between your second and final year. Or to combine study abroad with one of our partner institutions and a placement. If you choose this route, you will commit to working full-time in the fashion industry during your third year, before returning to complete your degree in your fourth year. As one of our students all of your teaching and assessments are included in your tuition fees, including, lectures/guest lectures and tutorials, seminars, laboratory sessions and specialist teaching facilities. You will also have access to a wide range of student support and IT services.

Our amazing industry connections also create opportunities for work experience through live projects as well as opening doors for work, generally though traineeships in creative industries. The fashion industry is very competitive and it can be difficult to find a job after graduating. Just having a degree is not enough, especially if you want to be a fashion designer.

ARC is a professional trade association representing recruitment agencies, businesses and consultancies across all business sectors.

IMRG is the UK association for online retail helping members understand and improve their online retail performance through a busy programme of performance benchmarking, data analysis, insight, best practice-sharing and events. British Marine is a trade association for the UK leisure, superyacht and small commercial marine industry. British Marine represents businesses including boat builders, chandlers, brokers, marinas, passenger boats and engines. They are providing a wide range of free specialist materials to support both member and non-member organisations during COVID-19 on the ARCO website or contact FODO is the representative professional body for eye care providers across the UK.

Organisations are the workplaces for today’s and tomorrow’s employees. As a consequence of increased competition, new technologies and increasingly diverse workforces, the environment in which organisations operate is challenging. This module seeks to explore the many factors which influence the actions, behaviour and decisions taken by people in the work-place. It focuses on the complex interactions and relationships between people and groups, both within and between organisations. Furthermore, it explores the impact of the external environment, particularly the expectations and behaviour of wider society, with its roles as a potential customer and citizen. The term fashion is used interchangeably with clothing, mode, dress, style and costume and yet it captures the spirit of the times, through seasonal collections in the major cities of London, Paris, Milan and New York.

Students can choose to work Independently or form collaborative partnerships to realise their proposition in developing the project through to completion. This unit introduces students to the fashion marketing theories and processes. Students will explore the marketing mix, market research and marketing strategies for different size organisations, before researching the influence marketing has on profit, reputation and the customer relationship. This unit explores fundamental aspects of advertising, the history, theories, purpose, scope and optimum channels. Students will investigate audiences and markets, as well as the psychological influence, impact and ethics of story-telling in marketing campaigns.
